In the early 1970s there was a cooperative effort between the US and the UK to improve the Tactical operations of the first generation: AV-8B Harrier

The idea is to combine tactical mobility and responsiveness reduce operating costs and increase the flexibility of the aircraft. To this end, the AV-8B was created to replace the first generation, AV8A by incorporating a new wing in elevated cockpit.

A redesigned fuselage one extra hardpoint per wing and other structural and aerodynamic refinements. The AV-8B is a vertical takeoff and landing vital aircraft, that is well suited to the special combat and expeditionary requirements of the Marine Corps.
